After the Pharaohs left the World Cup
The Egyptian Football Association, headed by Hani Abu Raida, issued an official statement expressing its strong displeasure with the refereeing of the Egyptian team’s match against Argentina, emphasizing its commitment to the rights of the “Pharaohs” and taking all measures guaranteed by the regulations to maintain the fairness and integrity of the competition.
The Union confirmed. In his statement. The anger was sparked by the officiating of the French referee, in addition to a number of decisions related to the video assistant referee (VAR) technology, which the statement said raised “many questions”, especially given the widespread criticism of the game’s management by the media and sports analysts.
The federation emphasized that it will not be relented in defending the rights of the national team, underlining its commitment to take all the steps required by international regulations to maintain the principle of fairness during the competitions.
Despite being knocked out of the 2026 World Cup, the Egyptian Football Association affirmed its pride in what the national team represented during its journey to the tournament, praising the fighting spirit and commitment shown by the players on the pitch, believing that they represented an honorable image of Egyptian football and deserved the respect of all.
At the same time, the federation thanked the Egyptian state for its continuous support to the national team under the leadership of President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi. It also praised the support of Egyptian fans inside and outside the country, in addition to Arab and African fans who supported the Pharaohs during their World Cup journey.
The federation concluded its statement by affirming that participation in the 2026 World Cup is an important step in the development process of Egyptian football, and promised Egyptian fans that the next stage will be continuous work in cooperation with government institutions to develop the game, expand the practice base, identify talents and train new generations who can continue to represent Egypt and the international community.
Egypt crashed out of the 2026 World Cup at the round of 16 after losing 3-2 to Argentina despite leading by two unanswered goals until the 79th minute.
The match saw widespread refereeing controversy, after French referee Francois Lettxer disallowed Mustafa Zico’s goal after video technology returned, and also refused to award a penalty to Mohamed Salah or Hamdi Fathy before Argentina’s third goal, decisions that drew sharp objections from the coaching staff and players.
