The new reality prepares Brazil for Europe’s 2030 World Cup
The Portuguese Football Federation announced on Wednesday that it had officially cut ties with Spain coach Roberto Martinez following their exit from the 2026 World Cup in the round of 16 after losing 1-0 to Spain.
The federation explained in an official statement that the contractual relationship with Martinez and his technical staff has ended as of today, thanking them for their “professionalism and commitment” over the past three-and-a-half years, a period that has seen Portugal win the UEFA Nations League title in 2025.
The statement indicated that the president of the Portuguese Federation, Pedro Proenza, has already started working on signing a new coach of the national team, after he also announced the arrival of the Portuguese delegation in Lisbon after the World Cup bye.

Martinez took charge of the Portugal national team in January 2023 and led the team in 45 matches, during which they won 32, drew 6 and lost 7.
