Amadou Onana: The Belgium and Aston Villa midfielder has torn his ACL

Aston Villa Midfielder Amadou Onana ruptured the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in his right knee while playing for Belgium at the World Cup.

The 24-year-old was substituted into his side on 21 minutes 4-1 win over USA At last 16.

Onana clutched his right knee after trying to get to the ball past Christian Pulisic.

He left the club after being treated on the pitch and was later seen on crutches and wearing a knee brace.

In a statement, Belgian team doctor Brahim Hassen called the results “devastating news”.

“Unfortunately, medical tests confirmed that Amadou had ruptured the anterior cruciate ligament,” he said.

“We immediately consulted with Amadou and Aston Villa Agree on the best method of his recovery. In the coming days, we will jointly determine the next steps in his treatment and rehabilitation.

“We will continue to offer our full support to Amadou.”

Onana will be with the squad for their quarter-final against Spain in Los Angeles on Friday (20:00 BST), Belgium said.

A partial tear or rupture of the ACL usually leaves players unavailable for six to nine months.
