A US immigration agent shot a man in Houston, Texas, when police tried to stop his car, US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) said.
The man who was killed Tuesday was identified as Lorenzo Salgado Araujo, described by ICE as a Mexican national and an “illegal alien” who tried to escape arrest during “enforced labor” by immigration officials.

Ronaldo Salgado, who identified himself as Salgado Araujo’s son, told Spanish-language television station Telemundo Houston that his father was shot while he was recruiting in the area.
The Department of Homeland Security (DHS), which oversees ICE, said that Salgado Araujo did not ignore orders to stop his vehicle, saying that he “drove an ICE vehicle, refused to obey several orders, and fired at his vehicle in an attempt to chase an ICE officer”. and
In past shootings, including the January killings of Renee Good and Alex Pretti, immigration officials have said their officers were under attack when the two were shot, which has been widely criticized in both cases.
Footage captured on Tuesday by a surveillance camera from a nearby business and reviewed by the Reuters news agency showed a man lying on the ground next to a white car surrounded by police, in what appeared to be the aftermath of the shooting.
Salgado Araujo was targeted by the operation because he was in the country without legal authorization, according to DHS.
Democratic U.S. Representative Sylvia Garcia called for a thorough and thorough investigation of ICE’s claims about the fatal shooting.
“All available videos, messages, and other evidence must be preserved and reviewed as part of a full and impartial investigation,” Garcia said in a televised statement.
Juan Proano, CEO of the League of United Latin American Citizens, agreed with Garcia’s demand for a comprehensive investigation into ICE’s actions.
“We don’t take DHS’s word at all,” Proano told the Associated Press. “There should be an independent investigation, and they should release all the videos.”
There have been at least 6 fatal shots and immigration officials since President Donald Trump’s move to crack down on immigration.
Good, a 37-year-old US citizen, was shot in the head and a federal immigration agent during the riots in Minneapolis. DHS also said Good was trying to hit the agent with his car, which local officials and witnesses disputed, saying he was just trying to drive away.
The backlash from Good’s murder and other similar incidents led ICE to cut back on some controversial operations.
However, Tuesday’s deadly confrontation in Houston came amid a recent increase in ICE arrests across the country, with immigration officials rounding up nearly 2,000 immigrants a day last week, Reuters reported.
