Switzerland beat Colombia on penalties in the World Cup Last 16 to set up a quarterfinal meeting with Argentina.

Switzerland defeated Colombia 4-3 on penalties after a goalless draw to set up a quarterfinal against defending champions Argentina.

The two teams squared off on Tuesday in the last 16 game – the last game to be played in the 2026 tournament outside the United States.

Both teams missed goals as Switzerland goalkeeper Gregor Kobel saved Cucho Hernandez and Ruben Vargas scored the goal.

Colombia, also supported by thousands of fans in Vancouver, had conceded just once in their four games before Tuesday’s game and the Swiss also struggled to fall.

The first clue came in the 21st minute when Kobel was forced to make a save to block Gustavo Puerta’s attempt on the edge of the penalty area.

The Swiss stepped up a gear just before the break, Camilo Vargas beating the ball from Fabian Rieder before denying Dan Ndoye.

But the game was goalless at half-time, with two well-matched teams struggling to build momentum.

Switzerland started the second half in front, but Colombia had time again, as Luis Suarez fired in a devastating shot.

Both coaches made a number of changes in the second half but once again struggled to find an opening chance, Colombian winger Luis Diaz kept quiet.

Ndoye had a shot at goal in stoppage time, but nobody managed to score, and the game was 0-0 at the end of normal time.

The game went into overtime late in the first period.

Colombia defender Jhon Lucumi headed in from a corner in the ninth minute, and Kobel’s effort from Jaminton Campaz was powerful as the South Americans upped the tempo.

At the end, Vargas dived to his left to tackle substitute Zeki Amdouni.

Campaz missed a chance to win the game with five minutes left.

With nothing to separate the teams, the game went to penalties.

Switzerland face Argentina in Kansas City on Saturday after Lionel Messi’s side beat Egypt 3-2 in Atlanta.

Switzerland’s last World Cup appearance was in 1954.
