FIFA has opened an investigation following a racist attack on American social media influencer IShowSpeed and a fan during Argentina’s 3-2 win over Cape Verde last Friday.
IShowSpeed - which has 57 million subscribers on YouTube and 53 million followers on TikTok – broadcast live matches during the tournament, with FIFA president Gianni Infantino and former Barcelona and AC Milan forward Zlatan Ibrahimovic appearing in some of the broadcasts.
In the year Soccer’s world governing body said it was aware of the incident, which took place on July 3 in the last 32 match at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami, and “an immediate investigation has begun”.
The 21-year-old, whose real name is Darren Jason Watkins Jr., can be seen on his YouTube channel wearing a Cape Verde kit and staring at a standing Argentina fan.
“The FIFA World Cup is a celebration of unity, diversity and respect,” FIFA said in a statement.
“It brings together people, cultures and communities from around the world and anyone who acts in a way that undermines these values is not welcome in our game.”
The alleged abuse by IShowSpeed came days later from France. Kylian Mbappe has branded the Paraguayan senator “despicable” and unfit for her position. After making several racist comments mocking his background and education.
Celeste Amilla, a member of Paraguay’s Liberal Radical Party, made her comments on X after her country lost to France in the last 16 of the World Cup.
The French Football Federation (FF) announced plans to file criminal charges, describing Amarilla’s comments as “absolutely disgusting and unacceptable”.
