Dolly Parton will celebrate his 81st birthday with the opening of the musical of his life on Broadway later this year.
Dolly: The True Original is billed as “a remarkable journey through the life of this doting mother” and is due to begin screenings at New York’s St James Theater on December 7 before opening on January 19, the singer’s birthday.
In a movie announcing the show, Parton promised it would be “true in every word”.
“This is not about the glitter and shine issue,” the singer said. “It’s about where I came from: where I’ve been, what I’ve lost, what I love and how I’ve found my way and express it in my words and the music that has been part of my journey.”
Parton described the upcoming show in New York as a “dream come true”, adding that it will feature her favorite songs as well as new songs she’s written for the production.
In a press release, the singer added: “My whole life has been singing. The best show! We have the best director, sets, costumes, choreography, music and everything you need to make an amazing, fun show! I can’t wait to see you there!”
Dolly: The True Original premiered in Nashville last summer and sold out the city’s Fisher Center for the Performing Arts.
Over the course of sixteen years, Parton has released more than 100m country music albums sold worldwide. According to a press release, the show will capture how he “dreamed, dared, stumbled and rose” through stories. It features her signature songs such as I Will Always Love You, Jolene, Coat of Many Colors and 9 to 5.
The director, Bartlett Sher, explained that the show will lift the lid on the life of the beloved but misunderstood star. “During our world premiere in Nashville, I was amazed at how much the audience connected with Dolly. You say her name and people light up and share the moments that inspired them and brought them joy,” he said.
“But despite her love, Dolly has never told her story. She offers visuals and visuals, but this song allows her to reveal an unfiltered story in her own voice. As we prepare to come to Broadway, we’re excited to show that rhinestones weren’t the whole story.”
Tickets are availability to the general public from 10 July, with access to fans.
