The final flight of United Launch Alliance’s Atlas V rocket is still a few years away, but a milestone for the company’s long-running launch came late last week.
The last Atlas V flight of the Amazon Leo broadband constellation took off from the Cape Canaveral Space Force Station in Florida at 12:30 am EDT (04:30 UTC) last Thursday, sending 29 satellites to run networks nearby and provide basic services.
All 29 spacecraft were launched from an Atlas V rocket within an hour of liftoff. They will use airlift to raise their orbits from an altitude of about 289 miles (465 kilometers) to their final operating point at an altitude of 392 miles (630 kilometers) above Earth.
