Wayne Rooney has claimed in scathing comments that Portugal players don’t enjoy playing with Cristiano Ronaldo the way Argentina players enjoy playing with Lionel Messi.
Ronaldo’s World Cup career ends in shock after Portugal lose 1-0 to Spain Monday in Round of 16, where Mikel Merino’s 91st-minute winner made the difference at Dallas Stadium.
The five-time Ballon d’Or winner started all five of Portugal’s World Cup matches in North America, scoring three goals, while Ronaldo, 41, scored twice in a 5-0 group stage win over Uzbekistan before netting a penalty against Croatia.
Messi, who is 39, clearly surpassed Ronaldo after scoring seven goals in four games to lead the race for the Golden Boot alongside France’s Kylian Mbappe and Norway’s Erling Haaland. While Messi is Argentina’s first star and an indispensable element for them, Rooney, who played alongside Ronaldo for six years at Manchester United, does not have the same impression when it comes to the Real Madrid and Portugal legend.
Ronnie said: Who is analyzing the matches of the 202nd World Cup on BBC?“You always put Ronaldo and Messi together because they are two of the best players to ever see the game.”
Rooney added: “But it seems that the Argentinian players are all for Messi and everyone is behind him and it’s clear that Messi was great in this World Cup, but I don’t get that impression from the Portuguese players with Ronaldo.”
