England called up Emmanuel Yogun and Chandler Cunningham-South to replace Cadan Murali and Benno Obano, who were both injured in the 45-21 defeat to South Africa in Johannesburg.
Murley’s injury creates a back-three selection headache for Steve Borthwick, who is already without George Farbank for the summer, after the Northampton star underwent surgery on his appendix before the Ellis Park loss, while fellow midfielder Freddie Steward also underwent an ankle injury assessment.
Sale wing Tom Roebuck was drafted in by Borthwick in place of Farbank, although it was Harlequins’ Marcus Smith who started at full-back on Saturday despite initially playing fly-half for club and country.
Obano, who returns to the England squad for the first time since February 2023, is replaced by uncapped prop Yogun, who could make his senior debut after three appearances for England A.
Cunningham-South, who endured a challenging season with Harlequins as they stumbled to a ninth-placed finish in the Gallagher PREM, also returns to the squad to bolster the back row.
Defeat against Fiji at Hill Dickinson Stadium will already put significant pressure on Borthwick, who is suffering a barren run of five consecutive Test defeats after a disastrous Six Nations campaign saw England sink to their lowest finish in the tournament.
England’s game against Fiji precedes a trip to Argentina to face Los Pumas in Cordoba in their remaining Nations Championship summer fixture.
