Maternal and child housing is about to be published

A comprehensive report on maternity and child care institutions, Magdalene laundries and workhouses in Northern Ireland will be published on Tuesday.

It compiles archival records as well as testimonies of victims and survivors, their relatives, and people who worked or volunteered for the institutions.

The report contains a number of findings and recommendations, including further consideration for further public inquiry.

More than 10,000 women, pregnant women and girls passed through secret institutions, mostly run by religious orders, between the 1920s and 1990s.

Many of them became pregnant as a result of sex crimes.

The panel has been investigating “ways and procedures” into the facilities, laundries and workhouses.
