Manchester United started the week looking to seal some of the most high-profile deals in the transfer market, but ended the past few days facing a completely different reality. The club lost out to Tottenham in the race to sign more than one key target as it continues to work on new deals and reassess its priorities ahead of the start of next season as some players look set to leave and new names appear on the transfer table.
Manchester United’s attempts to sign Matthew Fernandez have ended after Tottenham were able to complete the deal by agreeing an £85m fee with West Ham.
United were prepared to meet West Ham’s asking price, but through performance-related add-ons and incentives, rather than paying the full amount as a fixed and guaranteed fee. The club’s management also saw that the salary Tottenham were offering the player exceeded the ceiling they were willing to commit to.
That wasn’t the only blow as Tottenham also managed to land Sandro Tonali, one of the options being explored by Manchester United this summer, in a deal worth up to £100m.
On the other hand, “Manchester United” confirms that the deal to buy “Atalanta” midfielder Ederson for 40.5 million euros is going according to plan, and it remains for the player to undergo a medical examination.
