Belgium’s players were seen mocking US President Donald Trump and FIFA after co-hosts the United States were kicked out of the World Cup.
PR circus all around FIFA’s decision to withdraw Folarin Balogun’s red card and Donald Trump’s involvement in the alleged independent process dominated the headlines ahead of the last-16 clash in Seattle. However, it only appeared as galvanize in Belgium They beat the USA 4-1 to secure a quarter-final with Spain.
And Belgium rejoiced in the victory, with several players imitating Donald Trump’s trademark dance after their fourth goal, while the team’s official X account also mocked the US president and FIFA by posting a response to Balogun’s overturned ban: “Cancel it.”
Belgium midfielder Nicolas Ruskin said his team felt a “sense of injustice” after their impressive win.
“A lot has happened off the field in the last two days,” Raskin said.
“There was a sense of injustice within the squad, and we were determined to respond on the field.”
Belgium captain Youri Tielemans also insisted that the game boosted his team.
“We told ourselves we have to respond on the field. That’s what we did,” he said.
Trump confirmed that he had personally asked FIFA president Gianni Infantino to “review” the World Cup red card for United States striker Folarin Balogun.
World governing bodies announced on Sunday that the automatic one-match ban for Balogun’s dismissal against Bosnia and Herzegovina had been suspended, with the Americans’ last-16 opponents Belgium appealing the decision – unsuccessfully.
On Monday, UEFA said FIFA “crossed a red line” and “put the integrity of the game at risk” in allowing Balogun to play against Belgium.
But FIFA president Gianni Infantino is in favor of the independence of FIFA’s disciplinary committee.
Belgium head coach Rudy Garcia revealed that Balogun “came to talk” after the game.
Garcia said: “I really liked it. It’s not his fault, he’s not to blame and I told him.”
Asked if the controversy had affected his team, Garcia added: “Regardless of the US starting line-up, what’s important to us is our game plan.
“The team is very mature. I told them that is our most important thing.”
Mauricio Pochettino has admitted his disappointment at the “politics and manipulation” that led to the United States’ exit from the World Cup.
Asked later if the furor caused by the decision had affected him and his players, USA head coach Pochettino said BBC: “It didn’t affect our performance. It’s not an excuse. It just wasn’t our day.
“But personally, what’s with being insulted or getting a lot of bad messages?
“It is a rule for the federation to apply and try (to lift the ban). My position was to train the team. If Balogun is available because FIFA allows you to keep players, it is not a problem.
“I feel disappointed with a lot of people. They put politics and manipulation, ethics and integrity (first). If we talk about the history of this game, I’m personally disappointed.”
Like his manager, USA defender Tim Reem Balogun refused to use the situation as an excuse.
Speaking to reporters after the final whistle, he said: “No, it had no effect. We’ve done a good job with this team of letting the outside noise be the outside noise. It’s nothing to do with us as players and getting ready for the game.
“It’s one of those things. That’s the world we live in. We were totally focused on us as a group and a team and totally focused on the game and weren’t really concerned about what was being said or debated in the outside world.”
Meanwhile, fifa the president Infantino Over faced resignation calls Permission decision Balogun To play against Belgium.
The Liberal Democrat leader said Infantino had to go Sir Ed Davy. “Wherever it is held, the World Cup is for the fans.”
Resigning is not something that has crossed Infantino’s mind. He has been president for 10 years and will stand for re-election next year.
He is almost certain to win a new four-year term as he already has the votes needed to win. African, Asian and South American football confederations are backing him again.
FIFA’s president is elected by the 211 member associations. Asia, Africa and South America have 111 votes.
Infantino is likely to be the only candidate that means he will return to office by acclamation.
Infantino is flying to the US, Canada and Mexico to watch as many World Cup games as possible on a jet provided by Qatar Airways.
FIFA said its disciplinary committee was independent and was not involved in the decision to suspend Infantino Balogun’s automatic one-match ban.
