Swiss tennis legend Roger Federer has turned from a champion on the court into a successful businessman, but he wants to attend the Wimbledon championships every year as a regular guest at the Royal Lodge. He appeared yesterday, Monday, in a maroon suit, dark sunglasses and an All England Club membership badge, in a sight that confirms his close association with the tournament, which he has won eight times.
Federer, who retired in 2022, became the founder of the Laver Cup, which will celebrate its 9th edition next September. He also owns the Team8 agency, which represents tennis players, and is also a shareholder of the Swiss clothing and footwear company On.
This year’s tournament witnessed a historic moment as Federer lost his record for most matches won at the All England Club to Novak Djokovic last Sunday after the Serb defeated Roman Saviolin to become the most successful player on the green.
The most memorable images were during the last meeting. Federer was left alone in the “royal box” while Alexander Zverev and Jiri Lehika played, in a scene that reflected his special place at the heart of the tournament.
Federer rented a house near Wimbledon to spend a few days with his agent Tony Godsick, a testament to his close connection to the tournament beyond his on-court success.
Federer will stop in Newport, where he will be honored at the Hall of Fame in recognition of his illustrious career, saying: “I’ve always appreciated the history of tennis throughout my career.”
Federer also suggested to Rafael Nadal that they play exhibition matches in the future, as both are internationally popular and could also team up as captains of the Laver Cup team in the future.
