Kylian Mbappe: France captain slams Paraguayan politician Celeste Amarilla’s racist comments after World Cup round of 16 clash | football news

Kylian Mbappe has described a Paraguayan politician as “despicable” and unfit for his position after making several racist comments about the France star.

Celeste Amarilla, a senator and member of Paraguay’s Liberal Radical Party, made the comments on X following her country’s defeat to France in the last 16 of the World Cup.

In response, Mbappe told X: “Madam Celeste Amarilla, you are a despicable woman and unworthy of your position.

“You don’t represent Paraguay, the country that has sweat passion and honor throughout the competition.

“Through your recklessness and your blatant racism, the whole world has already forgotten the journey and the historic effort that your players accomplished in this World Cup, paving the way for an unworthy woman who has portrayed the worst of her country.

“I will never allow people like him the freedom to spread their hatred and racism around the world.”

The competition’s joint-top scorer, Mbappe, scored the only goal of the game from the penalty spot as France advanced to the last eight of the World Cup.

The France Football Federation also condemned the comments in a statement:

“The racist comments made by Paraguayan Senator Celeste Amarilla against Kylian Mbappe are absolutely despicable and unacceptable. How can anyone make such comments?

“These comments are criminal and condemnable. They must be prosecuted here and elsewhere. The FFF is referring the matter to the public prosecutor’s office for legal proceedings.

“The federation offers its full support to its captain, its players and, more broadly, to all victims of such hateful comments. More than ever, the FFF is committed to fighting racism and all forms of discrimination.

“These comments bring shame to those who make them and those who spread them. The players of the French national team represent France; our country has been insulted.”

Tensions rose throughout the game, with multiple brawls involving both sets of players and staff.

Didier Deschamps said Paraguay, who knocked out Germany earlier in the round, used “every trick in the book” during their fierce clash. Despite Paraguay’s perceived over-physical play, they did not pick up a single yellow card during the game.
