Did you know that a space shuttle launched the Statue of Liberty into space?
Instead, there were two “Lady Liberties” on the court Discovery when it departed on its fourth voyage in April 1985. Each statue was, in fact, 15 inches (38.1 cm) tall, but it was also made from bronze that was removed from the full-size statue during its ongoing renovation.
After STS-51D’s week-long mission, one of the spaceflight statues was put on display, and the other was melted down to make bronze seals, which were sold to the public by the Statue of Liberty Ellis Island Centennial Commission.
