Get ready for a delicious battle of the 10th – a spectacular fight between Lionel Messi and Mohamed Salah, two of the most outstanding players in world football, when Argentina meets Egypt in the World Cup round of 16.
Argentina have been favorites in every game they have played in the competition, but after they were encouraged to win in the final game, the reigning champions’ sense of invincibility was shattered.
On the other hand, Egypt is on their own record, preparing to chase the first round of the quarterfinals. One of only two African teams left in the tournament, they are the hope of the continent and will go forward with the best players in the world.
Al Jazeera tells you everything about Argentina vs Egypt:
Argentina topped Group J with a record nine points, wins over Austria, Algeria and Jordan. In the round of 32, they were pushed to extra time by a brave Cape Verde team before they got past the first team in the competition. 3-2 in a thrilling contest.
Egypt finished second in Group G with five points, drawing with Belgium and Iran and winning against New Zealand. They defeated Australia 4-2 on penalties in the round of 32 after the match ended 1-1 following extra time. It was the first World Cup for Egypt, who started their competition in 1934.
This competition Golden Boot competition it is one for the ages.
Argentina legend Messi, France’s Kylian Mbappe and Norway’s Erling Haaland are all tied on seven goals, with Mbappe leading the list, with his two assists breaking the tie.
If Messi – who has scored in each of Argentina’s four matches so far – finds the net against Egypt, he will not only become the Golden Boot winner, but will also join Guillermo Stabile (1930) as the only Argentine player to score eight goals in a single World Cup.
But ahead of Tuesday’s last 16 tie, there have been concerns about fatigue, and it’s not just Messi.
Argentina was forced to play extra time and Cape Verde in the heat in Miami in the US on Friday, while Egypt-Australia went to penalties on the same day. The grueling game left both teams with little time to rest and recover.

Messi admitted after the final match that he was tired, and lamented that Argentina failed to force their opponents to step up.
Meanwhile, Egypt relied heavily on their defensive unit and looked to Salah and Manchester City forward Omar Marmoush to launch an attack against Australia, a strategy they could use again against Argentina.
In Egypt, a fully fit Salah could be vital after the striker entered the Australian game nervous and at times looked reluctant to run fast in a fast 120-minute match.
If Egypt beats Argentina, it will become the fifth African country to reach the quarterfinals of the World Cup after Cameroon (1990), Senegal (2002), Ghana (2010) and Morocco (2022 and 2026).
Opta’s supercomputers give Argentina a 69.1% chance of winning in regulation time, while Egypt’s chance of winning is 12.3%.
The model estimates an 18.5 percent chance that the game will go to overtime.
