A senior Hamas official said the group wants the immediate entry of the National Committee for the Administration of Gaza (NCAG), the body responsible for overseeing the future of Gaza under the US-backed plan to end Israel’s war on Palestinian territory.

“Hamas has taken a new step because it will no longer be in charge of the Gaza Strip, to eliminate any reason that is active, which continues the violence and the destructive war,” Hamas spokesman Hazem Qassem told AFP.

“We hope that the NCAG will step in quickly, and Hamas has confirmed that it is ready to hand over government responsibilities to the committee to ensure its success.”

Reporting from Gaza City, Al Jazeera’s Hani Mahmoud said Hamas’ announcement was seen as “politically important”.

“It appears to be part of an agreement on the part of Hamas to advance negotiations, to pave the way for a technical committee to reach the Gaza Strip and take responsibility after months of increasing electricity there.”

The head of NCAG welcomed the announcement of Hamas.

Nickolay Mladenov, the representative in charge of the US-founded Gaza Peace Council, which will oversee the work of the NCAG, said the decision “underlines the importance of fulfilling the road negotiations”.

Mladenov said that once an agreement is reached on the remaining balances, the NCAG will be able to carry out its duties.

The NCAG remained outside Gaza for several months, due to Israel’s refusal to enter the besieged area.

Israel has ordered Hamas to take control of the city but has ruled out a direct takeover by the Palestinian Authority, which controls the occupied West Bank, for now.
