A local authority has launched an investigation into the care of a man who was arrested after a three-year-old boy was seriously injured in a crocodile enclosure.
The boy was attacked by at least one of the animals at Johnson’s of Oldhurst, near Huntingdon, Cambridgeshire, on June 18. His family is there. After that, he underwent surgery five times And he faces a long rehabilitation.
Police have arrested and bailed a 30-year-old Norfolk man on suspicion of attempted murder.
Norfolk County Council – which itself does not provide any care for people – launched the inquiry under the Care Act 2014, which requires local authorities to assess risks for adults in need of care and support.
Cambridgeshire Police said they were called to the zoo at around 13:30 BST on the day of the attack.
The boy from Cambridgeshire was visiting the zoo with his family. He remains in a stable condition at Addenbrooke’s Hospital, Cambridge.
The man arrested is believed to have a learning disability and was on a trip to the zoo with carers. It is not believed that he knows the child.
The man was bailed until September 18 and police said he was “assessed not fit to be interviewed”.

A spokesman for the county council said: “The individual in question does not receive care provided, provided or paid for by Norfolk County Council.”
A Section 42 inquiry is a statutory safeguarding procedure under the Care Act to protect adults with care and support needs from abuse or neglect.
The Care Quality Commission said it was aware of the incident and was “engaging with relevant organisations” in an effort to determine whether regulatory action should be taken.
