Thousands of people filled the streets of Tehran for Khamenei’s funeral.

The funeral is taking place less than three weeks after Iran and the US signed a preliminary agreement to end hostilities and reopen the critical Strait of Hormuz, which carries 20% of the world’s oil and gas shipments.

The two countries have given two months to reach a final agreement on Iran’s nuclear program, US sanctions and a permanent truce.

The Qatari mediator said Iranian and US negotiators had made “positive progress” in indirect talks in Doha last week, and that their next meeting would be scheduled for Khamenei after the four-day exchange of strikes.

Funeral services and prayers will be held on Tuesday in the central city of Qom, the center of Iran’s Shia Muslim clerics.

The ceremony will move to the Iraqi shrines of Karbala and Najaf on Wednesday.

They will end on Thursday and Khamenei will be buried in his hometown of Mashhad at the Imam Reza Shrine in northeast Iran.
