In between the World Cup fun
Today, Monday, the Spanish club “Barcelona” officially announced the appointment of German Benjamin Kugel as the coach of the technical staff headed by coach Hans Flick.
The Catalan club said on their official channels that the 46-year-old Kugel “has extensive experience in European football and national teams”, referring to his career at Werder Bremen, Cologne, PSV Eindhoven and Benfica.
The statement said the coach, who was born in Troisdorf, North Rhine-Westphalia, “spent nearly a decade at the German FA’s technical headquarters, where he worked side-by-side with Flick and contributed to the 2014 World Cup victory.”
Kugel’s most famous spell with the German national team from 2010 to 2017 was when he worked with Flick as the latter’s assistant to Joachim Löw before leading the national team to the World Cup in Brazil.
Kugel also took on the responsibility of overseeing physical performance at Red Bull Salzburg in Austria before moving to leagues in Holland, Portugal and Germany, finally arriving at the Camp Nou with a busy resume and proven competence.
