Controversy over ignoring a penalty against Barcelona

Was Osasuna subjected to arbitration injustice against Barcelona?

In the 34th round of the Spanish championship on Saturday night, the first half of “Barcelona” and “Osasuna” ended in a goalless draw.

Controversy erupted over the home team’s right to be awarded a penalty after Barcelona full-back Joao Cancelo tackled Osasuna’s Ante Budimir in the penalty area in the 6th minute.

Defensa Central reported that referee Isidro Diaz de Mira did not award a valid penalty to Osasuna.

He continued. “Cancelo ran right-footed into the footsteps of the Osasuna striker and although the referee adjudged the Barcelona defender to have got to the ball first, the contact was clear and even Cancelo’s intervention was rather imprudent in his rush towards the opposition.”

But Archivo Far, an Instagram platform specializing in controversial arbitration cases, confirmed that Osasuna was not entitled to a penalty.

He explained. “Cancelo Budimir preceded the ball, touched him, and it was the attacker who collided with the outstretched leg of the defender.

He noted: “The assistant video referee watched the kick and confirmed to the referee that there was no foul requiring a penalty.”
