Cucurella’s famous handball hero appears again
The International Football Federation (FIFA) has appointed an English referee, one of Europe’s elite referees who previously caused controversy at the last European Championship, to officiate the 2026 World Cup Round of 16 clash between Portugal and Spain.
The long-awaited match will be held in the American city of Dallas amid great public expectations for the meeting between the Euro-2016 champion and the 2010 world champion.
“And he declared.”FIFA“Anthony Taylor from England will be appointed to lead the meeting. Taylor has more than 10 years of international experience after receiving her international badge in 2013.
This is his third match at the 2026 World Cup, after serving in the group stage against Uzbekistan and Colombia, and against Senegal and Iraq.
Taylor regularly participates in English Premier League, Champions League and European Championship matches. He was also present at the 2022 World Championship to be held in Qatar.
It is not the first time he will officiate for Spain, having taken charge of La Roja against Germany in the Euro 2024 quarter-finals and that encounter saw a controversial incident after Mark Cucurella’s handball was disallowed for a penalty.
FIFA’s selection of the English referee reflects its confidence in his experience of officiating one of the strongest matches of the second round, a grueling quarter-final clash.
Anthony Taylor has been handed one of the biggest World Cup Round of 16 appointments.
This match will test everything: penalty area contact, tactical fouls, dissent, VAR discipline and game management under immense pressure.
