Anger in Belgium after strange decision
Belgium’s federation has formally adopted a plan against the International Football Federation (FIFA) decision to suspend the automatic suspension of American striker Folarin Balogun after he was sent off in the match against Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) ran into a big problem when it suddenly announced that Folarin Balogun could play for the United States in the Round of 16 against Belgium, despite receiving a straight red card in the previous round against Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Private sources told The Athletic newspaper that the Belgian federation has officially filed a complaint with FIFA, objecting to its decision.
Both the U.S. Soccer Federation and the Belgian Federation asked for their submissions on Monday morning, angering the Belgians, who have yet to receive FIFA’s decision for review because it has not been made public.
A member of FIFA’s appeals committee, which does not represent the federation at UEFA or CONCACAF to avoid potential conflicts of interest, was chosen to hear both sides before making a final ruling.
The Belgian federation issued an angry statement criticizing FIFA’s decision“To protect the legal rights of all participating teams and uphold the fundamental principles of fair play in our sport, whether at the World Cup or in future editions of the tournament, the Royal Football Association is exploring all possible options.”
