England coach Thomas Tuchel has questioned the mechanism that led to the suspension of American star Folarin Balogun despite being sent off in the Ecuador game.
FIFA has confirmed that Balogun can play with the United States in the World Cup final against Belgium, after deferring the one-match ban he received for his sending off against Bosnia and Herzegovina.
The Belgian federation said it was “surprised” by the decision, while ABC News reported that US President Donald Trump had contacted FIFA president Gianni Infantino to review Balogun’s punishment.
England’s Quansah was sent off during England’s 3-2 win over Mexico at the Azteca Stadium.
Tuchel jokingly said in the published statements ESPN Network “Harry Kane may ask President Trump to help overturn Kwanzaa’s red card.”
He continued. “First of all, I think, and let it be understood, that what happened to Balogun did not deserve a red card. But the video technology intervened and it’s clear that 3 people in the mouse room, apart from the referee, watched the kick and deemed it worthy of a yellow card, and that’s how the decision was made.”
He added: “Who has the authority to overturn this decision, and when, and on what basis, and how long can this issue continue is just strange to me. We just want consistency in decisions.”
