Neymar says Brazil career ‘over’ after Norway defeat


An emotional Neymar says his international career for Brazil is over His team’s defeat to Norway In the 2026 World Cup.

The 34-year-old came on as a 67th-minute substitute and was unable to prevent the Selecao’s elimination as Brazil lost 2-0 to Norway in their last-16 tie.

Neymar scored a penalty deep into added time at New Jersey’s MetLife Stadium but it proved to be nothing more than a consolation effort in his last appearance for his country.

“I tried, I tried. Now it’s over. I started here, I finished here,” Neymar said in an interview with TV Globo after his team exit.

Neymar made his debut for Brazil at the same stadium in August 2010, when he scored. A friendly 2-0 win, outsider against the United States.

He became Brazil’s all-time leading goalscorer with 80 goals, while 130 appearances for his country put him second on the all-time list behind Cafu’s 142 goals.

Neymar has not played for Brazil since 2023 amid a battle with injuries before being selected in his country’s squad for the 2026 World Cup.

He came on as a late substitute in Brazil’s final group game – a 3-0 win over Scotland – and his only other appearance at this summer’s tournament was against Norway.

He was playing in his fourth World Cup – having also played for Brazil in the 2014, 2018 and 2022 tournaments.
