The Ukrainian leader has announced that new roads and military equipment are being built along the border between the two, accusing Russia of using shelters in Belarus to launch attacks and undermine Ukraine’s security in December.
In launching their invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, Russian troops crossed the border from Belarus to Kyiv. However, Belarus did not directly participate in the fighting.
In his statement, Zelenskyy said that the city of Kherson in southern Ukraine was “brutally attacked,” and that drones were targeting civilian transport. Ukrainian media reported that at least two people were killed during the minibus strike in Dniprovskyi district.
The president also said that in Dnipro, Odesa, Sumy and Kharkiv, and that a drone hit a power plant, but the power had been restored.
Meanwhile, the Ministry of Defense of Russia said that it is making progress on the front line. It said it had taken control of the village of Myropillia in Sumy province on Saturday, Reuters reported.
On Wednesday, it said it had taken control of Novodmytrivka, north of Kostiantynivka in eastern Donetsk region.
Ukrainian army chief Oleksandr Syrskii said that Russian troops are moving to Kostiantynivka, which is part of the “fortified belt area” that is heavily defended by the Ukrainian army. He noted that Russian violence peaked in April.
Ukrainian officials reported that Russia launched more than 400 drones on Friday afternoon. Meanwhile, Ukrainian drones hit the port of Tuapse in Russia for the fourth time in 16 days, as part of what Zelenskyy described on Wednesday as “a new stage in the use of Ukrainian weapons to reduce the possibility of a Russian war”.
