The Three Lions are through to the quarter-finals after seeing off Mexico on a crazy night
England qualified for the quarter-finals of the 2026 World Cup after beating their Mexican counterparts 3-2 in a thrilling and exciting Round of 16 encounter at the Azteca Stadium on Monday morning.
Despite being outnumbered for more than half an hour after one of their players was sent off, England withstood Mexico’s pressure until the final whistle, progressing through the tournament and setting up a much-anticipated date with Norway in the next round.
With this victory, the England team will meet with Norway in the quarter-finals of the 2026 World Cup hosted jointly by the United States of America, Canada and Mexico.
England’s first goal came in the 37th minute after a unique attack from the right led by Bukayo Saka, who made a perfect pass into the penalty area. Jude Bellingham stepped up to it and hit a powerful header that found the back of the net.
It took just a minute for England to extend their lead with a second goal in the 38th minute, after Bellingham launched a wonderful attack that saw him pass the ball to Harry Kane in the box, who produced a smart touch to return to Bellingham, who fired a direct shot into Mexico’s net.
Mexico reduced the deficit in the 43rd minute when Roberto Alvarado took a free-kick from the left, but the English defense failed to clear it and the ball fell to Julián Quiñones, who fired it straight from the penalty area.
England were dealt a painful blow in the 54th minute after referee Jarrell Quansah was shown a red card for a nasty tackle on Jesus Gallardo, so the Three Lions ended the match with ten men.
Despite the numerical disadvantage, the English team managed to score the third goal in the 60th minute through Harry Kane, who successfully executed a penalty kick, hitting the ball to the right of the goalkeeper.
Mexico came back to reduce the deficit in the 69th minute, after the referee awarded a penalty, which Raúl Jimenez took hard to the keeper’s right to put the ball into the back of the net.
In the last minutes, the Mexican national team applied a fierce offensive pressure, equalizing the score, taking advantage of the numerical disadvantage in the opponent’s ranks. However, the English defense fought hard and managed to maintain their advantage until the referee blew the final whistle, announcing England’s place in the quarter-finals, where they face a tough showdown with Norway.
