Spanish newspapers have commented on the decision of the International Football Federation (FIFA) to suspend the automatic suspension of the American striker Folarin Balogun after he was sent off in the match against Bosnia and Herzegovina.
FIFA announced in an official statement on its website that “under Article 27 of the Disciplinary Regulations, the automatic suspension of American player Folarin Balogun has been suspended for one year as a trial period”, allowing him to participate in the World Cup round of 16 match against Belgium tomorrow, Monday, at the Seattle Stadium.
Balogun opened the scoring in the 45th minute of the United States’ 2-0 win over Bosnia and Herzegovina in the Round of 32, before receiving a straight red card in the 64th minute for a brutal tackle on defender Tarik Muhramovic.
Balogun was expected to serve a two-match ban for direct sending-off before FIFA makes a formal decision to suspend the ban, which will apply if the player is sent off again for foul play within a year.
The decision is considered one of those rare exceptions that international stadiums have not often seen, as the Disciplinary Committee rarely applies for the suspension of automatic expulsion penalties at major tournaments.
US President Donald Trump sent a message of thanks to the International Football Federation (FIFA) through the “Truth Social” platform after the decision to suspend the automatic suspension of striker Folarin Balogun, describing the decision as “the elimination of a grave injustice”.
