British Grand Prix results: Charles Leclerc wins dramatic race from George Russell and Lewis Hamilton

Charles Leclerc took Ferrari’s second victory in three races at the British Grand Prix, causing chaos in the closing stages.

Leclerc led Mercedes’ George Russell and Ferrari’s Lewis Hamilton, who took his first win in almost two years, before making a late change of heart in race control as the race ended under the safety car.

Silverstone has seen many amazing races in its long history but this was one of the most unique.

First, championship leader Kim Antonelli suffered some kind of suspension failure as his Ferrari closed for the lead and looked set for another victory.

As Antonelli dropped down the field, amid a series of discouraging radio messages, Red Bull’s Max Verstappen crashed at Stowe as he chased down Hamilton for second place.

The safety car for that event promoted Russell to second place when Mercedes decided not to enter the Brit while everyone else took a hot tire.

Antonelli crossed the line ninth but struggled with problems with his car, dropping him to 16th with a five-second penalty.

Adding to the drama, Hamilton is to be investigated after the race for a yellow flag violation.

The result had a major impact on the championship, with Antonelli closing the gap on Russell to 25 points. Hamilton is seven points clear, pending that investigation.

Highlights of the event-packed tournament were as follows:

  • An excellent drive from Leclerc that deserves to end the long drought of victory for Monegasque

  • The comparative advantage of Mercedes will change the face of the title battle

  • A rare mistake from Verstappen as he looked for an unlikely second place for Red Bull
