Zac Polanski has confirmed he will pay any outstanding council tax he owes after admitting he was not responsible for the charges brought against him while living on a houseboat in London.
The Green Party leader told the BBC he could be responsible for £3,000 to £4,000 in unpaid council tax, which is for the London borough of Waltham Forest.
However, Polanski has yet to tell the council if he expects a bill for unpaid taxes — and says he may not owe anything.
Speaking on BBC Breakfast, Polanski said working out the tax bill for living on a boat was “complicated”.
It was Polanski who sat at the Greater London Summit last month. Cleared by Greater London Authority. Following a complaint on the matter.
The council is still undecided as they say they are paying mostly business rates in the marina where I live, which I think I pay rather than council tax.
“I told the council and I still say it, if I find out I have any money, I will definitely pay that.”
Polanski added that he doesn’t know exactly how much he owes.
Waltham Forest Council previously said it was taking legal advice in “uniquely complex situations to navigate”.
“At the end of the day, the council is saying it might look like I don’t owe anything, because of the business value,” Polanski said.
“If you were to fix it in terms of Waltham Forest, it would probably be between £3,000 and £4,000 if I owed anything.”
In May The Green Party has admitted that Polanski may have failed to pay council tax On the houseboat that was his home until recently.
The party said Polanski had apologized and “taken steps to pay any council tax owed”.
