Michael Hollick produced a sensational eagle on the final hole to win the DP World Tour’s BMW International Open on Sunday, as YouTuber Brad Dalke sealed a convincing top-30 finish.
After overnight co-leader Holick missed a par putt on the 16th, victory looked assured for fellow South African Henny du Plessis, who led by three shots before a bogey on No. 17 opened the door for his countryman.
After a birdie on the 17th, Holick then created an opportunity for eagle on the final hole with a great approach shot and he holed it from 20 feet to card a final round 67 and win the tournament at 18 under.
“I was actually very calm the whole day and stuck to the things I had done all week,” Holick said.
“You start making a few birdies and it’s easy to think too far ahead. I pulled myself back and said to Dave, who was caddying for me, ‘If I have a chance to play the back nine and win the tournament, that’s what I want’.”
“The funny thing is when I went to bed yesterday, I thought if I had one last chance to make an eagle, this would be it.”
He added: “It’s amazing. It’s given me and my family such a good opportunity.”
The result was cruel on du Plessis (-17), who started two shots behind Hollick and Bernd Weissberger and made seven birdies in a final-round 66.
His only blemish of the final round came on the 17th, and even after missing his birdie putt on the final hole, he thought he had done enough to at least secure a playoff. In the end, he had to settle for second place, one shot behind Holick.
Austria’s Weisberger (-14) is tied for third with France’s Oihan Guillamoundegui and Mexico’s Carlos Ortiz fourth (-12). England’s Marco Penge and Joe Dean were among four players tied for ninth place (-9).
Earlier in the week, YouTube golfer Brad Dalke found himself remarkably challenged near the top of the leaderboard in his DP World Tour debut, sitting two shots off the lead at the halfway stage after a second-round 66.
Best known for his contributions to the popular Good Good YouTube golf channel, Dalke received a sponsor’s concession to play in Munich and was embroiled in controversy with seven birdies and a dropped shot in Friday’s round.
However, his challenge faded on Saturday as he posted a five-bogey third-round 75 and he followed that up with a one-over-par 73 on Sunday to finish five under for the tournament.
Dalke found the water twice on the par-five 11th on Sunday, recording a triple bogey to spoil his final round and drop to a tie for 30th.
The 28-year-old was a bit of a golfing prodigy in his youth, winning the 2015 Junior PGA Championship and finishing runner-up at the US Amateur a year later, which earned him a spot in both The Masters and the US Open in 2017, though he failed to make the cut in either.
He is now expected to play in the PGA Tour’s Rockets Classic at the end of the month.
