Sleepless night
Express Harry Kane, England captainHe hoped his team would provide the ideal antidote to Monday morning’s depression by qualifying for the World Cup quarter-finals.
Coach Thomas Tuchel’s side take on tournament co-hosts Mexico at the Azteca Stadium early on Monday, looking to extend their North American dream.
Loyal fans in their home country held out fleeting hope that the game could be watched at a more convenient time as FIFA considered moving the kick-off to 7pm British Summer Time (12am local time) due to the threat of thunderstorms.
However, FIFA stuck to the match’s original date after opposition from both football associations, meaning fans had to stay up all night as the kick-off time remained at 1am on Monday.
Prime Minister Keir Starmer extended the weekend when he announced earlier this week that pubs could stay open until 5am, and Keane wants fans to have a sleepless night.
Harry Kane said: In the highlighted announcements of the “ESPN” network“It’s obviously good news that pubs are staying open to the public.”
The captain of the England team added. “We know how important the World Cup is to everyone and the fans back home, so hopefully some people will honestly stay up all night, go all the way and play until the next day and then get some sleep.”
Kane continued. “Obviously it’s long overdue and we all appreciate the support. That’s what makes a World Cup game so special sometimes, it’s the different times and the different memories you make.”
“I think there’s nothing everyone likes more than celebrating with the sunrise at five or six in the morning,” Kane concluded.
