Leigh Leopards bolstered their Betfred Super League play-off hopes after the David Armstrong Magic led them to a dominant 24-6 win over Warrington Wolves at the weekend.
Warrington Hill looked a shadow of their usual selves at the Dickinson Stadium, with Sam Burgess’s side managing just one score, a breakaway try from Mark Sneyd in the last two minutes of the game.
Other than that, there was little to celebrate for Wolves, who were outclassed by their opponents in the first half, but head coach Sam Burgess said he was proud of his team for fighting back.
“It was a tough start, we went in the wrong direction with mistakes and penalty counts,” Burgess said.
“I’m proud of them for hanging on. Leigh are a challenging team with a lot of great players. We’ll dust ourselves off and go again next week.”
Leigh started strongly, driving the Warrington defense back to their try line, before Tessie New bulldozed over for her fourth try of the season.

They had another not long after, Umilla Hanley offloading man of the match Armstrong, who wobbled his way upwards to try and break away from the chasing pack of Wolves players.
The first half continued in the same vein. Although Leigh weren’t great in their scoring, Warrington didn’t offer much going forward, with the half-time stats proving damaging.
Leigh had 61 per cent possession going into the break and had 180m more than their opponents.
Back on the field, Warrington looked a bit cheeky, but they continued to make mistakes, and Leigh made them pay for not taking chances.
Perhaps their best chance of the second half came not long after half-time, with Wolves working their way through the set, before Sneijd fired a kick over the top of Leigh’s Adam Cook.
Cruelly, the Leopards then turned defense into attack, with Edwin Ipepe using his strength to crash over the Wolves’ tryline from dummy half for his side’s third try.
Things went from bad to worse for Warrington, with Sam Powell sent to the sin-bin for a hip-drop tackle on try-scorer New.
Powell wrapped his leg around New, who fell into an awkward position, stretching his leg at an uncomfortable angle and was replaced by Gareth O’Brien. As Leigh fans fear the worst, New is seen sitting in the dugout with ice on his knee.
With a man down, Wolves struggled to keep up with the Leigh attackers, Cook laid a short ball to Hanley, who cut a sensational line through the Wolves defense and headed home for his fourth try of the match.
“It was a great performance,” said Leigh Leopards head coach Adrian Lam Sky Sports. “I thought we were pretty physical the whole time.
