madrid — Marta Kostyuk Beat Ukraine Mira Andreeva Russia won the Madrid Open 7-5, 6-3 on Saturday.
The two players, whose countries have been at war since the invasion of Russia in 2022, did not shake hands at the net after the match or pose together at the awards ceremony.
23rd-ranked Kostyuk collapsed again on the clay court and clutched his face when Andreeva’s last shot flew long after converting on match point. After getting to his feet, he performed an acrobatic backflip as the crowd cheered. Meanwhile, Andreeva slumped in her courtside seat and cried into a towel.
Kostyuk ended his victory speech with “Glory to God and glory to Ukraine”.
The victory was Kostyuk’s third WTA title, but her second in as many tournaments after winning last weekend in Rouen.
Eighth-ranked Andreeva, 19, congratulated Koystuk on Wednesday when she spoke to the crowd after being awarded her runner-up trophy.
“I want to congratulate Marta and her team for today’s win and for her season,” Andreeva said, as Kostyuk applauded. “You’ve won two tournaments in a row, so congratulations.”
Kostyuk defeated the fifth rank Jessica Pegula and 13th rank Linda Noskova En route to the final, her first for a WTA 1000 tournament.
Against Andrieva, who was playing in her third WTA 1000 final, Kostyuk converted four of her break chances and saved four of her opponent’s six break points.
“His standing right now feels incredible,” Kostyuk said. “Until last year I was 2-7 in Madrid and I never thought I would win the title here. It was definitely not my favorite tournament, but thanks to the crowd for supporting me.”
