Britain’s Ducard Arthur Ferry defeated Zizou Bergs in a five-set thriller to reach the fourth round of Wimbledon and keep the domestic singles title alive – despite suffering three nosebleeds during the match.
Wildcard Ferry recovered twice from a set down to win 2-6 7-5 2-6 7-6 (7-3) 7-6 (10-5) in front of a packed crowd on Court 18.
Ferry was out of the top 100 at the start of the championship but played above par. The only home player to reach the singles third round.
After battling to beat Bosnia’s Damir Dzumhur and Finland’s Otto Virtanen in his first two matches, Ferri looked to have finally beaten Belgium’s Bergs.
But the 23-year-old held his nerve and rallied to become the first British icon since 1993 to reach the fourth round at Wimbledon.
“There’s really no words,” Ferry said after throwing himself to the floor in celebration.
“I don’t know what’s going on right now. It’s going to take time to digest it.”
Ferri will next face Italy’s Matteo Berretini or Grigor Dimitrov.
