The coach will return training to the senior ranks.
The German Football Association is set to take an unprecedented step in its modern history, handing coach Jurgen Klopp full and near-absolute powers to lead a rebuilding process for the national team in an attempt to restore the Manschaft to its place among the top international teams after its latest World Cup disappointment.
The German newspaper “Bild” wrote that the appointment of Klopp as the head of the technical staff of the national team is almost settled, because the federation intends to give him the widest range of powers in the history of German football.
The German publication notes that Klopp will have complete freedom to make technical and administrative decisions related to the national team, including the selection of the coaching staff, the development of strategic plans and the restructuring of the first team’s working system.
Bild reveals that the first step in this new direction will be a redistribution of roles within the federation, as the future CEO of the German Football Association will not be directly involved in the affairs of the national team, but his work will focus on developing the infrastructure of German football at the grassroots level and developing talent.
As for the management of the national team, it will remain entirely in the hands of Klopp and sporting director Rudi Voller if he continues in his role, giving the new manager unprecedented decision-making independence.
Klopp will also be given complete freedom to choose his coaching staff, with the ability to use any assistant he sees fit.
The newspaper has named several potential candidates to join the new technical staff, most notably Pippin Linders, Klopp’s former assistant at Liverpool, who is considered one of his closest associates, in addition to former Germany captain Per Mertesacker, who has been mooted as a possible option in the technical team.
Klopp is widely supported by influential figures in German football, including the management of Bayern Munich, who see his appointment as a necessary step to reignite fan enthusiasm and restore the spirit of competition that the national team has lacked in recent years.
Reports suggest that the powers to sign Klopp exceed those given to Jurgen Klinsmann when he took over as national team coach in 2004, as no German manager has ever negotiated from a position of such power, given the immense pressure the federation faces to ensure the best possible candidate is appointed to lead the next round.
With this move, the German FA aims to enable Klopp to transform the national team on a new basis, combining tactical discipline and fighting spirit, thus returning Germany to the ranks of the first teams and making them a strong contender for the European Cup of Nations, Euro 2028.
