British GP sprint: Kimi Antonelli beats Lewis Hamilton to extend world championship lead at Silverstone | F1 News

Kimi Antonelli overtook pole-sitter Lewis Hamilton to extend his world championship lead with victory in the British Grand Prix sprint.

Ferrari’s Hamilton held off Antonelli at the start but succumbed to near-constant pressure from the Mercedes driver on the eighth circuit of the 17-lap race, before the Italian teenager claimed the first sprint win of his Formula 1 career.

Antonelli’s championship lead over his Mercedes team-mate George Russell increased to 43 points, unable to overtake McLaren’s Lando Norris in the closing stages.

Antonelli eventually moved ahead of Hamilton by 2.7 seconds and the pair were in a league of their own, a further seven seconds back to Norris in third.

Racing Bulls’ Liam Lawson held off Red Bull’s Issac Hajjar to take eighth, but faced a post-race investigation after a questionable defensive move in the closing stages.
