An ancient silver hoard found in an Edinburgh attic has sold for £60,000

A hoard of antique silver found by chance in a family’s attic in Edinburgh has sold for almost £60,000 at auction.

More than 100 pieces of silverware dating from the early 1700s to the early 1900s are expected to fetch up to £23,000 when they go up for sale at London’s Elmwood auctioneers.

Members of the sales family, who did not want to be named, found the items in a dusty box that had been sealed for more than a century.

Their spokesperson said: “We are delighted with the results and delighted with the response to the collection.”
