Egypt overcome Australia’s World Cup ban
Egypt officially secured their place in the round of 16 of the 2026 FIFA World Cup with a valuable penalty shootout win (4-2) after the end of regular and extra time against Australia to draw positively (1-1) in the World Cup Round 32 match at the Dallas Stadium this Friday evening.
The Pharaohs came into the game with a clear attacking appetite, and as a result they managed to open the scoring in the 13th minute after midfielder Emam Ashour played a perfect pass to left-back Karim Hafez and Ashour headed it past the Australian goalkeeper.

In the second half, as Australia tried to regain the lead, they equalized in the 55th minute following a defensive error as defender Mohamed Hani mistakenly cleared a free-kick but accidentally headed it into his own net, sending the game to penalties.

Mahmoud Saber, Rami Rabia, Mohamed Salah and Hossam Abdel Majid scored for Egypt in the penalty shootout.
Jackson Irvine and Auer Mabil scored for Australia, while Harry Sutter and Lucas Herrington missed.
With this historic qualification, Egypt became the second African team to secure a place in the last eight of the current World Cup, joining sister country Morocco who pulled off a major upset by knocking out the Netherlands as the Atlas Lions look ahead to their upcoming showdown against Canada in the next round.
This visa carries a special historical symbol for Egyptian football with the historic fourth participation in the World Cup. As it was previously knocked out of the World Cup in the round of 16 by the old version that witnessed only 16 teams in 1934, while failing to make it past the group stage for Italy 1990 and Russia 2018, so the current squad has written a new line in Pharaohs World Cup history.
