Former world number one Naomi Osaka made new ground as she entered the fourth round of Wimbledon for the first time with a win over Daria Kasatkina.
Osaka has won four Grand Slam singles titles on hard courts, and she has struggled to play her usual, big-hitting game on grass-courts at the French Open and the All England Club.
But the Japanese 14th seed – who arrived on Court One in another show-stopping outfit – looked at home at SW19 as she defeated Kasatkina 6-1 6-3 in just 65 minutes.
The dominant display came less than five weeks after Osaka reached the last 16 of Roland Garros for the first time.
Osaka could face top seed Aryna Sabalenka in the next blockbuster clash if the Belarusian beats Latvia’s Jelena Ostapenko later on Friday.
“I definitely felt really good today. I’ve played a lot of matches on grass for the last two weeks, so I’m feeling really confident,” the 28-year-old said.
Osaka reached her first grass-court final at the Bad Homburg Open last month, although on that occasion she was forced to retire early in the second set against Karolina Muchova.
However, the run in Germany seems to have given Osaka a much-needed confidence boost on the surface and she is yet to drop a set at Wimbledon.
