Exploring the stars (and planets, and telescopes) in VR



Having a computer strapped to your face for 40 minutes was one reason to sweat a little. But the tour of the Universe I had just received — including a close visit to the Sun, the supermassive black hole at the center of our galaxy, and the shape of hell 41 light-years away — provided another excuse to feel the heat.

Smithsonian Starstruck: A Special Event and a 40-minute astronomical walk. They started in Washington, DC, in May with large individual tickets now from $29 to $35 and tickets for groups of four or more from $18 each (both now 15 percent off); it will also open in Denver, Orlando, Florida, and San Antonio, Texas, later this year. I stopped by on a Monday in June to enter.

After a short ride that included setting preferences such as closed voice and signing the steering wheel, I had enough time to sit on a bench near the display area (which has had some VR experiences) to enjoy watching someone wearing a VR headset exclaim, “Oh my God!”
