A behind-the-scenes look at Midjourney’s medical treatment leaves many questions unanswered

The introduction of AI, which is widely known for creating images, is released a behind-the-scenes video of a dunk-tank ultrasound scanner, which it plans to install in a facility and hopes to revolutionize medicine with low-cost, detailed, radiation-free imaging. The roughly 20-minute tour comes from tech YouTuber Marcin Plaza, who is also an engineer at the company.

Plaza explains bluntly that the scanner is a bunch of probes “snapped up and slapped on a glorious tube that has an elevator,” connected to external computers and Raspberry Pis. The video shows a lot of the hardware and the team building it, but mostly it looks questions of physics and art were raised while Midjourney announced the project.

The experts said Seaside that Midjourney has shown little evidence that it can overcome the known limitations of ultrasound, a technology that has been around for years, or produce the kind of detailed images it has been showing at the scale and speed it promises. The company has emphasized that the scanner will be launched as a hygiene product that focuses on body composition, not as a medical device, which would require FDA approval and clinical trials. Midjourney expanded on this approach in the video: chief medical officer Tom Calloway said that focusing on physical design allows the company to “run” and open immediately after testing. But the video still leans heavily on medical language, asking what doctors can do to get regular check-ups over time.

Calloway didn’t seem too concerned about clearing up any confusion in the video. “I don’t think anything is clear,” he said, promising regular blogs with updates. CEO David Holz, meanwhile, said Midjourney’s lack of funding gives the company the freedom to follow the scanner. “No one can tell me not to do that,” he said.
