“He’s a brilliant player, but we all know the sport and the ins and outs and the intricacies of those,” Farrell said of Lowe’s contact situation.
“They get complicated from time to time and sometimes it works, most of the time it works for us, luckily.
“But this time, obviously that’s not the case. I know James is happy with the deal he finally got and he’s moving on to a new venture.”
Farrell said Lowe would be “absolutely missed” but “we have to move on”.
“Someone has to step up and take the mantle that James has done over the last few years, brilliantly for Ireland.
“But at the same time, it’s the same every year, every year in the campaign. Things happen that surprise you a little bit, and I think we’re missing something like Kellan Dorris on this tour, Ryan Baird on this tour, Paddy McCarthy, all of that.
“It’s just rugby and it’s just life and the stars didn’t align for whatever reason.
“I certainly wish him well. I do. I thank him for what he has done for Irish rugby.”
