Despite his international career coming to an end following Algeria’s round of 32 exit at the 2026 World Cup, Riyad Mahrez managed to write his name in the tournament’s annals with a new historic record that reflects his continued competition at the highest level until the final moments of his international career.
The Desert Warriors captain featured mainly in Algeria’s clash with Switzerland, which ended in a two-goal defeat for the Greens in what was the Algerian star’s last appearance for his country after announcing his retirement from international football.
At the age of 35 years and 131 days, Mahrez became the second-oldest African player in World Cup history to start a knockout stage match, according to the Opta Football Statistics Network.

Only Senegalese Idrissa Gana Gueye, who played against Belgium in the 32nd round of the current draw at the age of 36 years and 278 days, surpassed the Algerian captain by this number.
The number comes to confirm the excellent position Mahrez maintained in the Algerian national team until the end of his career, after he remained one of the most iconic elements of the Greens and the leader of the golden generation that won the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations title.
Despite a disappointing end to his World Cup journey, Mahrez bid farewell to the international arena after leaving a great legacy with the Algerian national team, whether through his collective achievements or individual figures that will go down in African football history.
