Switzerland finally ended their World Cup knockout hoodoo with a 2-0 win over Algeria to book a last-16 clash with either Colombia or Ghana.
The Swiss, who had been eliminated in each of their last seven knockout games at the tournament, ended 88 years of knockout pain as goals from Brill Embolo (10) and Nottingham Forest’s Dan Ndoye (46) secured victory in Vancouver.
Algeria made a bright start to the game but were unable to capitalize as Switzerland tied up former Man City star Riyad Mahrez.
Switzerland had a late chance to add to their tally but substitute Fabian Ryder failed to convert from close range. There was only one negative to what was a comfortable evening for Murat Yakin.
Switzerland will face the winner of the last-32 tie between Colombia and Ghana in Vancouver on Tuesday.
More to follow.
10: Goal! After Algeria’s bright start, Manzambi’s bursting forward and cross set up Mbolo for the Swiss opener.
46: Goal! Switzerland started the half perfectly as Forest winger Ndoe’s superb finish doubled the lead.
50: Chance! Mahrez’s only real chance was blocked by his former Man City teammate Manuel Aknaji.
81: Miss! Substitute Fabian Ryder missed an open goal as Wizerland missed the chance to add a third.
Sky Sports’ Oliver Yu:
Newcastle fans will be keen spectators of the action in Vancouver.
Eddie Howe’s side are interested in Switzerland forward Johan Manzambi, who lit up the World Cup with three goals in the group stage.
He continued his excellent form in the tournament, setting up Embolo’s opener with a blistering run, showing what Newcastle can get if their interest in the Freiburg winger remains strong.
The £42m-rated 20-year-old had Algeria’s players worried by his fearsome pace and power whenever he got the ball, and Switzerland wanted him on the ball at every opportunity.
His direct approach has Vancouver fans off their seats, and you could easily see the same at St. James Park if a move were to materialize.
