A Labor politician wants training courses for rabbit owners in Wales

When Hedges’ Labor lost power in Wales in May’s general election, Plaid Cymru became the largest party and took over the Welsh government nomination for the first time since the country gained its own parliament in 1999.

On Tuesday, Hedges – who is now Welsh Labor’s culture spokesman – used a question to First Minister Run Up Yourworth to ask what steps the Government is taking to improve animal welfare.

After App Yorworth said the country would develop a “science-based animal health and welfare plan”, Hedges said it reflects badly on the community. “If we allow animals to be mistreated through ignorance or cruelty.”

Hedges suggested several reforms, including microchipping cats, and impounding horses, owning primates, breeding game birds and ending the use of Larsen traps – spring-gate wire cages used to catch birds such as magpies and crows.

He added that after a short training course, Wales should be allowed to demonstrate their understanding of the rabbit’s needs.
