Ahead of Algeria v Switzerland clash…angry call sparks Mahrez crisis with Al-Ahly

The Algerian star is going through hard times

Al-Ahly star Riyad Mahrez’s crisis with the Saudi club escalated just hours before the 2026 World Cup match against Switzerland.

Tomorrow morning, Friday, the Algerian national team will meet Switzerland in the 32nd round of the 2026 World Cup to be held in America, Canada and Mexico at the BC Place Stadium in Vancouver, Canada.

Hours before the match, Saudi journalist Muhammad Al-Buqairi revealed new developments regarding Al-Ahly’s desire to drop Mahrez’s services next season, despite his contract being extended.

Media reports have confirmed that Al-Ahli have activated a clause in their contract with the Algerian star that allows him to unilaterally terminate his contract until June 30 last year.for 15 million dollars.

Al-Bukairi explained that Mahrez’s agent made an angry call to Al-Ahly management to inquire about the authenticity of the rumours, especially as he had not received an email.

Mahrez’s agent has confirmed that the player has left for the World Cup and is confident of staying with Al-Ahly until his contract expires at the end of next season, but the club’s management have informed him that a final decision will be made within two weeks.

Another Saudi journalist, Sultan Al-Shammari, confirmed that Al-Ahly’s management handled the matter professionally, having informed Mahrez and his agent of the matter before the June 30 deadline.

Al-Shamari explained that Al-Ahly management wanted to postpone the decision until Mahrez’s participation in the 2026 World Cup was over, but had to do so because the deadline for terminating the contract had not passed.

A Saudi journalist accused the Algerian player’s agent of escalating the crisis by presenting what he described as inaccurate accounts of how the club had treated Mahrez in order to build public pressure to overturn the decision.

Mahrez has been one of Al-Ahly’s biggest stars over the past three years, following his move from Manchester City in the summer of 2023, where he led them to two AFC Elite Champions League titles and one Saudi Super Cup.
