Ethan Galbraith: Where did £10m go in Swansea’s biggest sale?

Historically, Swansea have tended to sell players when their value peaks.

Ollie McBurnie departs after a 24-goal season. Daniel James left at just 21 years old after his breakthrough campaign. Joel Pirro steps up after a great scoring season in the Championship.

Galbraith seems to fit the same model.

The Northern Ireland international team has enjoyed its strongest ever campaign.

The 25-year-old started 36 matches last season and accumulated 3,108 minutes, the seventh-highest total in the squad. His four goal contribution only tells part of the story.

Comfortable in midfield or at full-back, Galbraith contributed 39 interceptions and 201 recoveries, the highest of any Swansea outfield player.

Those numbers compare favorably with Flynn Downs before his £12m move to West Ham.

Downes recorded one goal and two assists with Swansea in the 2020–21 season with 40 interceptions and 218 rebounds, while completing fewer successful dribbles per 90 and playing fewer minutes.

When Downes moved to the Premier League with West Ham, he barely featured for the Hammers and has since rebuilt his career with Southampton.

Galbraith’s departure seems entirely in line with Swansea’s modern transfer strategy.

The Swans have built a reputation for developing players, maximizing their value and selling them at the right time. Galbraith now joins a roster that includes McBurney, James, Rawdon, Downs and Pirro, all of whom were traded when they reached their peak during the championship season.

Can Swansea push for a bit more? Probably. But a fee worth £10m plus add-on value for a player signed just a year ago represents strong business.

For Stoke City, it represents a sign of intent. They spent more than £10m on a player for the first time since 2018-19 when they signed both Benik Afobe from Wolves for around £13m and Tom Innes from Huddersfield for £11m.

Whether this proves a bargain for Stoke or a fantastic deal for Swansea will ultimately depend on how Galbraith fares for the Potters next season.
