German prosecutors prosecuted the 50-year-old Ukrainian on several counts. explosion which destroyed two Nord Stream underwater oil pipelines connecting Russia and Europe in 2022.

The prosecutor’s office declined to comment on Wednesday’s indictment of the accused, identified as Serhii K in court documents under German privacy laws.

Serhii K is accused of attacking civilians, causing explosions, and destroying buildings, according to German broadcaster ARD.

An underwater explosion destroyed both Nord Stream 1 and Nord Stream 2 pipelines so dangerous that no gas could pass through it, cutting off Russia’s main gas routes to Europe for months after Moscow invaded Ukraine in February 2022.

In December 2025 in a prison sentence reported by the Federal Court of Justice, prosecutors said that Serhii K helped coordinate the group that used the boat Andromeda, to plant explosives in pipelines near the island of Bornholm in Denmark in September 2022.

According to the documents, Serhii K is thought to be a board member and team leader, not a professional swimmer or bomber.

Berlin-based law firm Menaker, which is representing the Ukrainian defendant, did not comment on the charges.

Prosecutors confirmed to the AFP news agency that Serhii K was the same suspect who was arrested in August 2025 in Italy as well. he was sent to Germany in the following November, and at that time he was called Serhii Kuznietsov.

At the time of his arrest, German prosecutors said that Kuznietsov used false documents to charter a boat, which left the German city of Rostock to carry out the attacks.

Kuznietsov refused to be part of the sabotage operation. He said he was a member of the Ukrainian armed forces and was in Ukraine at the time, which his security team said gave him “active security” under international law.

In response to a question from the German magazine Der Spiegel at a press conference in Dublin on Wednesday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said that he would soon explain in detail the charges against Serhii K.

“We haven’t received any details; maybe I haven’t seen them,” Zelenskyy said. “I couldn’t say yet,” he added.

The Ukrainian government has previously denied any involvement in the destruction or knowledge of the plot to blow up the Nord Stream 1 and Nord Stream 2 pipelines.
